Patterns of Abuse: Understanding the Many Forms of Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors, not a single event. It's about one person using a variety of tactics to gain and maintain power and control over their partner. The abuse can take many forms, and they are often used together to create a cycle of fear and dependency.
Below are some of the common patterns of abuse.
The Characters
The Locksmith 🔗🔑
This character represents social isolation, a tactic used to cut off a person from their support system. An abuser may forbid you from seeing friends or family, spread lies about you, or monitor your communications to ensure you have no one to turn to for help.
The Account Keeper 💰
This figure embodies financial abuse, a powerful way to control a person's independence. An abuser might take your paycheck, prevent you from getting or keeping a job, or control all the money, leaving you financially dependent and trapped in the relationship.
The Puppet Master 🎭
This character symbolizes emotional and verbal abuse. It's a pattern of manipulation, gaslighting, and constant criticism designed to erode your self-esteem and make you question your own reality. The goal is to make you feel worthless and fully dependent on the abuser.
The Storm Cloud ⛅
This figure represents intimidation and threats. It’s the use of menacing looks, gestures, angry outbursts, or direct threats of harm to instill a constant sense of fear. The abuser doesn't need to physically hurt you to create a threatening environment that keeps you on edge.
The Muzzler 🤐
This character embodies sexual abuse and coercion. This pattern of abuse involves any unwanted sexual contact or forced sexual act. An abuser may also use threats or manipulation to pressure you into sexual acts you do not consent to.
The Ticking Clock 💥
This figure symbolizes physical abuse. Physical violence is often used to assert dominance and control in a relationship. This can include hitting, kicking, pushing, or any act that causes physical harm. The constant threat of physical violence can be just as damaging as the abuse itself.
